The object manager in the Mac version does not have checkboxes, but you can use the context menu to change the visibility.

1. This functionality has not changed. This feature did not (intentionally) exist in previous versions.
2. Also, this behavior has not changed. There was never an option to re-open the project.
Maybe you are confusing the application with with WYSIWYG Web Builder?
